The Portland Hospital invests in High Definition Camera Technology for Keyhole Surgery

The Portland Hospital have recently invested in the latest Full 1080p High Definition (HD) camera technology from Karl Storz Endoscopy, one of the leading endoscopic companies in the world, to enable surgeons to perform complex Minimal Access Surgery or ‘Keyhole Surgery’.

Minimal Access Surgery (or MAS) is performed by making small incisions or using one of the bodies natural orifices, such as the naval, to provide access for a miniature telescope, which is in turn connected to a High Definition camera to provide an internal view displayed in Full 1080p HD. A smaller incision may then be made to allow instruments to be used.

The benefits of MAS includes its less invasive nature, with only very small incisions, less pain and reduced hospital stay with patients returning to their normal activities in considerably less time than conventional open surgery even after the most complex procedures.

The images produced by Karl Storz High Definition imaging systems provide a huge step forward in imaging technology, particularly with the advent of new surgical techniques. The increased resolution, improved colour and contrast and increased lateral view enable the surgeon to have an improved widescreen view and show the highest quality images for Minimal Access Surgery.

The Portland Hospital evaluated a number of High Definition systems from various companies but selected Karl Storz due to its superior image quality, ease of use and the after sales support offered by the company.
