Abstract:
The results of 100 consecutive upper gastrointestinal endoscopies is reported, in 85 instances. Thirty-seven patients had persistent upper abdominal pain or vomiting and negative x-rays. All had a positive endoscopic diagnosis. They became asymptomatic upon appropriate medical treatment. Endoscopy in upper gastrointestinal hemorrhage in this series was markedly superior to x-ray. Fifteen of 19 patients had either a “negative” or misleading x-ray. In each of the 15, the site of bleeding was found endoscopically.
